のり Nori Seaweed

Our factory has tested the Nori for Radiation ongoing since the disaster 3 years ago with no issues. In addition We test our Nori at an independent Lab here in the US with each Harvest.(generally twice per year) We test for more then 22 different Isotopes of Radiation. Our nori comes out "non detectable" in every category.

Our Harvest location is a 4000 acre growing area classified as certified Organic growing waters, located in the Northern part of the East China Sea, well below the southern tip of Japan. It is up current and up wind from Fukushima which is located off the Northern tip of Japan on the Pacific Ocean side. Since prevailing winds and currents in that part of the world go South to North, our site has thus far remained unaffected. The next Harvest occurred in late February, and we will have that new harvest product sometime at the end of May at which time we will test again.

The samples of whole kelp leaf have shown some elevated activity in the channels associated with Cs-134 at 604KeV, however no secondary lines have been found and this should not be cause for concern. In an effort to confirm or deny the presence of Cs-134, the whole leaf kelp sample has been set aside and will be re-counted in several months to allow for confirmation via the half-life of the isotope in question. Previous samples of whole kelp measure over the summer will also be examined. 

ケルプの葉のサンプルに、セシウム１３４のエネルギーチャンネル（604KeV)に関連するピークが見られた。しかしながら２番目の線には見られずおそらく心配はないと思われる。セシウム１３４が含まれてないことを確認するために、このケルプの葉のサンプルは保存し、半減期と関連して数ヵ月後に再度測定する。前回のケルプのサンプルも同時に調べる。

A: We contacted our manufacturer and would like to update you with their reply regarding this issue you brought up, 

"We forwarded your customer’s email to the California Rice Commission.  So far, no one has heard of such a study and there have been no concerns to need a test for radiation levels in the Sacramento Valley.  If we hear further information on the radiation topic we will certainly let you know.

As to the GMO I would say:

The California rice industry annually tests the industry's rice seed and the harvested crop for the presence of the one GMO trait found in US long grain rice. The results of those tests are published annually and may be found at: http://www.calrice.org/pdf/2013/Testing+of+2013+CA+Rice.pdf. 
We are pleased to report that the tests continue to be negative."

A: All of the rice for the Tamaki products are grown in Northern California valley.  As an industry, rice in California has been tested for GMO and none has been found.  As for the radiation, it was a few years ago that a trace amount was detected in the state of Washington.  California has not detected any levels and we have not felt it necessary to test the soil for radiation.

Ａ：　We are north of Sacramento.  According to the testimony of radiation epidemiologist and　Professor in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University and Scientific Director of the International Epidemiology Institute, John D. Boice, Jr., Sc.D.  His testimony to congress states,

With this being said, the California Rice Industry does not see the need to test for radiation.  This is very costly and unnecessary considering Japan grows and eats more rice in their own country with no consequences to their health.

My group measured soil, air filter and dust samples from Washington, Oregon, California, and British Columbia. This particular soil sample, with 8 pCi/g of radiocesium, was our highest North American result. It came from a site on the outskirts of Portland, OR. The next highest result came from a site near Boulder, CO. Except for followup samples near these two sites, no other US or Canadian samples came close to the levels of radiocesium in these "hot spots." Given the nature of radioactive fallout, this is an expected result. Both hot spots are likely due to rainouts that took place during March or April 2011. A recent study by the USGS, "Fission Products in National Atmospheric Deposition Program—Wet Deposition Samples Prior to and Following the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant Incident, March 8–April 5, 2011", found remarkably similar results.

The 8 pCi/g soil sample from Oregon was split and sent to a certified commercial radiation testing laboratory. (PACE Analytical, formerly General Electric Walter Miltz lab.) Their result came back as total 134Cs + 137Cs = 11.0 pCi/g. The commercial lab's 137Cs result was higher than ours, and thus gave a higher overall figure.

I should have added, that none of the followup samples exceeded 0.5 pCi/g of Cs134 + Cs137. I apologize for the oversight.

８ｐＣｉ／ｇのオレゴン州の土壌サンプルは分割して民間の認定された放射能検査機関に送りました。そこからの結果はセシウム１３４と１３７の合計が11.0 pCi/g(407bq/kg)でした。民間の機関のセシウム１３７は私たちのものより高くなる傾向がありますので、全体の数字として高くなったのでしょう。私たちの検査でセシウム１３４と１３７の合計が0.5 pCi/g(18.5bq/kg)を超えたものはありませんでした。見落としがあり、申し訳ありませんでした。

It may also be helpful for you to know that the US's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Import Alert 99-33 after the tsunami and earthquake disaster. Any food ingredients or products coming from Japan are inspected and tested by the FDA following US regulations. So Kikkoman imported products and ingredients from Japan are being diverted for testing by the FDA before they can be released into the US food supply.
